Why you might be low on energy

Posted by Melissa Finlay on April 7, 2022

How our hormone balance can affect our energy levels.

Answer me this. Are you putting up with some annoying PMS symptoms every month? Bloating, cramping maybe? Or maybe your mood takes a nosedive in the lead up to that time of the month?

These are all signs of hormonal imbalance, and that could be the reason why you never seem to have enough energy, no matter what time of the month it is!

Excess oestrogen.

The most common culprit when it comes to hormone imbalance is oestrogen excess. In the right amounts oestrogen helps us feel energised, strong and healthy, but a build up in your body causing high oestrogen is a sign that your liver is not performing at its peak.

A diet high in processed foods, alcohol and caffeine can slow down the liver with all the extra work you’re giving it to do, so when it comes to some of the deeper cleansing work it needs to do- it just can’t be effective.

One of my favourite ways to support the liver and it’s work is through eating cruciferous veggies, such as broccoli and kale. They have liver cleansing properties and do such a great job giving the liver a boost.

Low progesterone.

On the other end of the spectrum of hormone imbalances is low progesterone. We need our progesterone levels to be nice and high in the second half of our cycle (post ovulation) in order to do things like sustain a healthy pregnancy, but it’s also really important in terms of sustaining good levels of energy, and stable moods in the lead up to our period.

Stress is one of the biggest reasons progesterone may not be at optimal levels. So managing stress is vital when it comes to hormone balance and therefore good energy levels.
